2010-11 Scholarship Recipients
Amelia plans to attend Central Michigan University to pursue a degree in elementary education. Amelia enjoys working with young children as demonstrated by volunteering in the summer school program for the past six years and mentoring younger students. She has also participated in varsity softball and varsity volleyball and has been a member of the Student Council and German Club. She works at Martin’s Super Market.
Kaitlyn is enrolled at Central Michigan University and plans a career as a writer. She is majoring in English literature and minoring in art. She also loves working with animals and someday hopes to be involved in animal rehabilitation. She participated in cross country all four years of high school.
Matthew is enrolled at Spring Arbor University and plans to receive a degree in secondary education and hopes to return to Edwardsburg to teach history in the high school. Both parents are teachers and Matthew plans to carry on the tradition. He played two years of junior varsity soccer and one year each of junior varsity baseball, golf and basketball He also was a member of Students Against Drunk Drivers (SADD) for three years and Student Council for one. Matthew has been in 4-H for ten years and is involved in his church group. He has also worked at the Victorian Pantry in Granger and assists in catering weddings.
Ashlyn is enrolled in the honors program at Ferris State University with a major in biology with a pre-optometry academic track. Ashlyn has been very involved in the band program. She has been drum major for two years and principal and co-principal clarinetist. She was selected for the District 6 All Star Band in both 2008 and 2009. Ashlyn played varsity soccer for three years and participated in the Science Olympiad for four years. She has been a volunteer at the St Joseph Animal Shelter and Lakeland Hospital, Relay for Life, Child Identification (ID) Day and the multiple sclerosis walk.
Alexander is enrolled at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. His goal is to earn a dual bachelor’s degree in history and anthropology and a masters in Archaeology. He plans to pursue this career in Italy and work with the ancient Roman period artifacts. Alexander has been involved in many extra curricular activities including Student Council, marching band, concert band, pep band, pit band, as well as baseball, football, cross country and basketball.
Valerie has been accepted into Central Michigan’s honors program and pre-veterinary program. Her career goal is to be a veterinarian which she hopes to achieve through the program at Michigan State University. She has played soccer for three years and has been a member of the Business and Professionals of America program. Valerie is employed at Chic-Fil and is training to be a team leader.
Calvin is enrolled at Southwestern Michigan College and is pursuing a degree in business with a major in accounting. He plans to obtain a job in the business or banking area. Calvin has been a member of the Business and Professionals of American for his junior and senior year of high school. He also volunteers at his church and is employed by Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Paige is enrolled at Southwestern Michigan College and is planning to pursue a career in business with emphasis on language and communication. She has a passion for foreign language as demonstrated by her enrollment for four years in German, completing a year of Chinese, year and half of Spanish, two years of French, a year of Japanese and a semester of Latin. Paige has been involved in the 5-H Horse club and was a member of student council. She is Miss Congeniality for Miss Edwardsburg 2010 and thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the community service aspects of the program.
Jenna is enrolled at Grand Valley State University and pursing a degree in nursing. She eventually plans to return to school to earn her Nurse Practitioner degree and work in the newborn intensive care or obstetric unit. Jenna has played tennis for four years, track for two years and been a member of Students Against Drunk Drivers (SADD) for four years. She has volunteered 22.5 hours for each of her seven rotations for the Professional Health Career Academy and worked at Child Safety Day as well as assisting at the Edwardsburg Tennis Camp.
Megan plans to attend Southwestern Michigan College for two years and then transfer to a four year university to pursue her career goal of physical therapy. Megan has been a member of the marching band and also on the crew for many of the school district’s musicals. She also played soccer and mentored at the elementary school.
Ashley plans to build on her Professional Health Careers Academy background by obtaining her Registered Nursing license and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. and then pursue a Nurse Practitioner degree. She will either attend Southwestern Michigan College or Bethel College. Ashley has been a member of the Student Council, National Honor Society, Science Olympiad and Professional Health Careers Academy; She has also been involved with mission trips and mentoring.
Nicole Marie Nasco
Nicole plans to attend Southwestern Michigan College for one year and then transfer to a four year institution to earn a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Nicole has been involved with SADD, HOPE and assisted with food drives at her church. She also played tennis four three years and is employed at Simonton Lake Drive In as a waitress.
Rebekah plans to attend Bethel College to study music education with a goal of becoming a high school choir director. She has been involved in many activities throughout high school including the participation in the musicals, playing tennis and volleyball. She was a member of the Student Council and National Honor Society and worked with children through her church.
Krista plans to attend Bethel College and earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She further plans to earn her doctoral degree in that same discipline, and eventually to open her own business. Krista has been involved in several extracurricular activities including National Honor Society, the educational talent search, Students Against Drunk Drivers (SADD), Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the plays presented by the high school drama department. She works for K-Mart part time.

Dakota has been a band member for three years and spent many hours volunteering through her church. She plans to attend Southwestern Michigan College for two years and transfer to a small university to pursue a degree in social work.
Laney plans to attend the University of Michigan to pursue a career in secondary education with a goal of becoming a high school biology teacher. She has been very active in high school. Laney has been a member of the National Honor Society, the Student Council, Students Against Drunk Drivers (SADD), the yearbook staff, Science Olympiad and Business and Professionals of America. She has also volunteered with the Relay for Life, Reins of Life and the Edwardsburg summer school program.
Wade plans to attend Southwestern Michigan College and pursue an education leading to a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine. He has participated in football, wrestling and baseball all four years of his high school career and his love for sports has determined his career choice.
Emily’s career goal is to become a nurse and earn her degree from the University of Michigan School of Nursing. She has been involved in numerous extracurricular activities. She played softball for two years, varsity tennis for three, was a member of the varsity equestrian team for four and played volleyball for two years . She was also a member of Students Against Drunk Drivers (SADD), National Honor Society, yearbook staff and 4-H. She was the German student of the year for three years and received academic excellence awards. Emily has also participated in many volunteer experiences throughout her high school career.
Kerstyn Marie Whitehead
Kerstyn plans to attend Southwestern Michigan College and become a registered nurse. She has been involved in choir and has participated in Relay for Life every summer. She has been a member of 4-H and works for a landscaping company.
Kayla is enrolled at Eastern Michigan University with a career plan of becoming a registered nurse. During her high school years, Kayla played soccer for two years and was a member of the junior varsity track team. She is also a member of the Children of the American Revolution and has participated in community events through that organization. She has worked as a soccer referee for the youth soccer program.
