2012-13 Scholarship Recipients
Catherine Brown of Niles, MI is planning to attend Bethel College to pursue a career in journalism.Catherine has been active in her church with the youth groups, participating in concerts and hospitality events.
Emily Cavinder, of Niles, MI is enrolled at Southwestern Michigan College to obtain nursing prerequisites and has previously obtained several credits in that area from the Lake Michigan College health academy. Her career plans are to become a registered nurse and work in the labor and delivery area. Emily has been employed at Old Navy since 2009. She was involved in Students Against Destructive Decisions, and the LEO Program (Leadership Excellence Opportunity), serving as the group’s secretary. She has also volunteered with the Salvation Army. Appalachia.
Brittany Daily of Niles, MI is also planning to attend Southwestern Michigan College to begin studies in the area of dental hygienist with the ultimate goal of becoming a dentist. Brittany is currently employed at Subway as well as Apple Valley Natural and Organic Foods. Her high school career included three years as a Varsity Soccer player earning status as scholar athlete each year. She also volunteered with Christian Ministry Christmas Behind Bars and HOPE ministry.
Taylor Kanaby of Edwardsburg plans to attend Cornerstone University to pursue a degree in Secondary Education. Taylor currently works as a cashier in the cafeteria at Elkhart General Hospital. Her high school career included involvement in many programs and activities such as National Honor Society, Student Council, Students against Destructive Decisions, Science Olympiad, Marching /Concert Band, Varsity Track and Field, Varsity Cross Country to name a few.
Tera McClellan of Edwardsburg is currently enrolled at Southwestern Michigan College in the pre-med program. Tera plans to continue her goal of becoming an Ophthalmologist by attending Ferris State University after earning her Associate degree. Tera works as a server at the Cracker Barrel restaurant. Tera was very active in high school participating in JV Track, Future Problem Solvers, Educational Talent Search, Students Against Destructive Decisions, volunteering through the LEO program and through her church.
Brooke Portwood of Niles, MI plans to attend Grand Valley State University. Her career goal is to become a physical therapist. Brooke’s high school career has been extensive with participation in cross country, basketball, track, volleyball and softball. She has also been active in the National HonorSociety, Students Against Destructive Decisions, the LEO program as well as HOPE.
Ashlyn Richcreek of Niles MI will be attending Grace Bible College. Ashlyn’s career goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree in worship arts and Biblical studies with an ultimate goal for a life in ministry. Her work history reflects her commitment to service as she has been employed at a retreat and conference center as well as the NuWay Thrift Store. She also has performed various housekeeping duties, volunteered for a month at a local Christian based camp, and traveled on mission trips to Haiti. She has also been a member of the National Honor Society and Students Against Destructive Decisions(SADD).many wonderful things.
Heather Valentine of Edwardsburg, MI is planning to attend Southwestern Michigan College to earn an associate’s degree and then transfer to a four year institution to earn a degree in Secondary Education. Heather has worked at the Matterhorn Conference Center as well as the Simonton Lake Drive In. During her high school years, she was a cheerleader, a member of the Student Council and National Honor Society, Educational Talent Search and served on the newspaper staff, and prom committee. She also was a class officer.
Evan VanBelle of Edwardsburg MI will attend Trine University to obtain a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on designing prosthetic limbs. Evan participated in basketball, soccer and golf all four years of high school and ran cross country his senior year. He also participated with Upward Basketball as an assistant coach and referee. Evan has worked part-time as a maintenance crew member for Life Action Ministries.
Cory Yoder of Edwardsburg MI is planning to attend Southwestern Michigan College and then transfer to a four-year university to pursue a career in information technology. Cory has been involved in choir, the golf program and German Club during his high school years.
